An Italian Feast to Remember at San Carlo Knightsbridge
There are only a handful of restaurants in London that have truly left a lasting impression on me, and I can now confidently add San Carlo Knightsbridge to that list.
From the moment we walked through the doors, we were made to feel genuinely welcome. Every detail of the experience felt thoughtful, from the warm greeting by the hostess to the attentive service right until the moment we left, navigating a pram with both a newborn and a toddler in tow.
Ever since moving to London, San Carlo had been on my list to visit. With several locations across the city, it felt like the perfect choice for an early Father's Day celebration with the whole family.
The restaurant itself is stunning. The décor strikes a balance between elegance and character, creating a space that feels both sophisticated and inviting. The menu celebrates the diversity of Italian cuisine, showcasing dishes inspired by different regions of Italy rather than focusing on just one style.
To start, I ordered the Mozzarella in Carrozza, a traditional dish from the Campania region. Crispy fried bread encased melted mozzarella, served with basil and tomato sauce. It was my first time trying it, and it was everything I hoped for: simple, comforting and full of flavour.
My partner chose the Calamari Fritti, lightly fried squid served with fresh chilli and tartare sauce. Beautifully presented and perfectly cooked, it was the ideal dish to share.
For the main course, I opted for the Branzino, and it was far more than just a meal. It was an experience. The whole sea bass arrived encased in a crust of sea salt. At the table, the waiter poured over grappa and set it alight before expertly cracking open the salt crust to reveal the fish beneath. He carefully removed the head, tail, skin and spine before serving the delicate fillets directly onto the plate. It was theatrical without feeling overdone, and the fish itself was exceptional.
We also ordered the Lasagne Emiliane, which was pure comfort food at its finest. Layers of fresh pasta, slow cooked Bolognese, béchamel, mozzarella and Grana Padano came together in a rich, satisfying dish that was impossible not to enjoy.
Dessert was the Manteca alla Nocciola, a dish designed for sharing and prepared tableside. Watching the waiter crush Ferrero Rocher into soft hazelnut ice cream before finishing it with chocolate sauce added a playful touch to the experience. The result was indulgent, creamy and utterly delicious. Every spoonful felt like a little piece of heaven.
As for my toddler, she surprised us all by happily tucking into the Risotto al Porcini e Tartufo. Another dish prepared with a touch of theatre, the risotto was mixed and finished inside a Pecorino cheese wheel before being topped with Italian black truffle. Rich, earthy and beautifully balanced, it quickly became one of the highlights of the meal.
The seasonal specials were equally tempting, including the Tagliolini Limone & Caviale, featuring delicate tagliolini in a lemon butter sauce finished with Italian sturgeon caviar, and the Polletto alla Griglia, a charcoal grilled chicken marinated with lemon, wild fennel, honey and chilli.
With Father's Day approaching, San Carlo is also a wonderful option for families looking to celebrate. Across its London locations, guests can enjoy everything from handmade pasta and fresh seafood to premium steaks, signature Negronis and indulgent desserts. Whether you are planning a relaxed family lunch or a special evening meal, the combination of exceptional food, polished service and welcoming atmosphere makes it an easy recommendation. For those looking to make the occasion even more memorable, Alto by San Carlo, the group's rooftop restaurant above Selfridges, offers one of the most beautiful dining settings in the city.
Some restaurants serve great food. Others create memorable experiences. San Carlo manages to do both.
