Interview with Nils Stene, CEO of Norvegr
Norvegr has remained in the Stene family for three generations. In an industry dominated by scale and speed, what does legacy truly mean to you today?
Our legacy gives us confidence in the belief that we are doing the very best for our brand and our product. We want to create the finest bespoke pieces possible for every customer, and our legacy helps us stay true to that standard.
In a world that continues to move faster and faster, it feels good to slow down. Helping people thrive in the world they live in by improving their sleep is something we find deeply meaningful.
The brand has historically operated with discretion rather than overt promotion. Is this restraint a strategic decision or a reflection of Norwegian cultural identity?
Norwegians tend to be modest by nature. My family has quietly produced what we believe to be the best bedding in the world, supported by generations of loyal customers and recognition within discerning circles.
As Norvegr’s third Stene family CEO, I am the first to make a conscious effort to share more of what we do with the world. One of my goals is to place Norvegr in the path of more people who will truly appreciate it.
A part of our business is working with renowned interior designers around the world, and their clients depend on discretion. Being entrusted with something as personal and sacred as sleep is a privilege. We would never consider revealing names and risking that trust.
In your view, how does Norvegr redefine luxury in an era where excess often overshadows substance?
For us, true luxury is something that makes a meaningful and positive impact on your life. The sleep essentials you keep closest to your body, and for many hours of the day, should be of the highest quality.
It makes perfect sense to begin there, even before investing in things that are used far less frequently. If you think about the cost per sleep, quality bedding that lasts a lifetime and improves your rest is a far more valuable investment than a new car or even a holiday.
The sensation of weightlessness is central to the Norvegr experience. How did this philosophy of “light as a cloud” become the foundation of the brand?
One of our early customers once described sleeping under their duvet as being wrapped in a warm cloud. That idea stayed with us.
We source our materials with the goal of creating the best product possible. The higher the quality of the down and the greater the fill power, the lighter, warmer and loftier the duvet becomes. Combined with the way we construct our duvets, this produces an exceptionally light product that maintains a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout the night.
With quality duvets, thicker and heavier does not always mean warmer. In fact, it can harm breathability and temperature regulation, which often leads to disturbed sleep.
Our aim is to keep you just warm enough, but never too warm. You should not wake because you are too hot or too cold. You should simply sleep well through the night and wake feeling restored. Ideally, you barely notice the duvet at all while it keeps you perfectly comfortable.
Your channel construction is technically distinctive. How do tradition and sleep science intersect in the making of a Norvegr duvet?
Norvegr blends tradition, craftsmanship and science. Every day we work to refine the duvet and make each piece as perfect as possible for its owner.
The choices we make in construction and raw materials are critical to the final product. Our channel construction was developed as an alternative to the traditional box stitch, allowing warmth and air to circulate evenly from chin to toe. This helps prevent both hot and cool spots within the duvet.
Over time, its success has become part of the Norvegr tradition
The restoration service allows a product to remain with its owner for decades. Do you believe longevity is becoming the ultimate measure of contemporary luxury?
Longevity is important both for us and for our clients. The finest down is extremely durable, so it would be a great shame for it to be discarded when it can be restored and made as good as new.
Being able to contribute to the preservation of the planet’s resources feels rewarding. That sense of responsibility has also become a modern form of luxury for our clients.
Choosing the highest quality and caring for it over many years was once the norm. That tradition disappeared during the age of mass production but is now returning as a modern expression of luxury.
Our customer focused service is also a form of luxury. All Norvegr pieces are made to order, and most customers choose to go through our sleep consultation process. We discuss their sleep habits, environment, preferred temperatures, height and sleep style in order to design their bedding precisely for them.
We even create dual fill duvets for couples with different needs. Knowing your bedding has been handmade specifically for you is a rare luxury.
Choosing to buy once and buy well is also a luxury choice, though not necessarily the most expensive one. When you consider the lower cost of restoration compared with replacement, the lifetime value becomes clear. Over time, the cost is often lower than medium tier products that need replacing far more frequently.
The sourcing of eiderdown from abandoned nests in Svalbard is both rare and delicate. How do you balance exclusivity, ethics and sustainability within this process?
Nature largely determines this process, which we rather like. Each year we can gather less than 100 kilograms of eiderdown from Svalbard, depending on the conditions of the season.
The birds are never disturbed. We only collect the down left behind in the nests after they have returned to the sea and no longer need them. The impact on nature is minimal.
Eiderdown is also exceptionally resilient. If properly cared for, a duvet made from it can last a century. The down and feathers used in our other collections are sourced to the same ethical standard. We would not sleep under anything less, and we would never expect our customers to either.
If you had to define the essence of a Norvegr night in one sentence, what would it be?
The quiet joy of looking forward to sleep, knowing that the finest duvet will carry you into deep rest and that the bedding surrounding you has been designed entirely for you.
