A Continuous Chapter in the Art of Fine Dining at Locatelli in the National Gallery

Just as painting evolves through the centuries, reinventing forms and meanings, gastronomy is also an artistic expression. Few places reflect this dialogue between flavour and aesthetics as beautifully as Locatelli, situated inside the National Gallery. In a building where colour, light and history breathe through every wall, the kitchen rises to the level of visual and sensorial art.

The Chef and His Legacy

At the helm is Giorgio Locatelli, one of the most respected Italian chefs of his generation. Born in Lombardy and raised in the warm rhythm of a family kitchen, Locatelli built a career marked by excellence, sensitivity to ingredients and deep respect for Italian tradition. His former restaurant, Locanda Locatelli, held a Michelin star for many years and became a reference for those who seek sophisticated Italian cuisine in London.

Locatelli cooks with emotion. His dishes honour memory, origin and artisanal technique. There is narrative in his food, childhood aromas, regional classics revisited and textures shaped with intention. From this solid foundation he continues his gastronomic vision inside the National Gallery, placing cuisine side by side with the great masters of painting.

When Art Meets Flavour

Having an acclaimed restaurant inside the National Gallery is more than convenience, it is symbolic. Dining among works of art is to recognise that cooking, when made with soul, is also art. Caravaggio worked with light and shadow. Locatelli works with contrast, balance and purity of taste. Canvas and plate invite contemplation.

The restaurant is located in the Sainsbury Wing, a bright and elegant space with direct views of Trafalgar Square. Architecture meets atmosphere. Classic meets contemporary. The dialogue continues on the plate, handmade pasta, seasonal crudi, delicate antipasti and desserts that celebrate Italian essence. Presentation is meticulous, often resembling an ephemeral painting created to be admired and then tasted.

Searcys as Foundation and Locatelli as Essence

The presence of Searcys, one of the most traditional hospitality groups in the United Kingdom, brings support, efficiency and excellence in service, while Locatelli adds identity, warmth and soul. Searcys provides structure. Locatelli delivers essence.

My Experience

I had the pleasure of visiting Locatelli and the experience went beyond a simple meal. Each dish felt like a composition, a balance of colour, texture and aroma. Several times I observed the plate as one observes a piece in an exhibition. When flavour met form, the experience became complete.

Service was impeccable. Attentive, gentle and with that warm charm associated with Italian hospitality. There is care, rhythm and sensibility. I left with the sensation of having lived a sensory moment.

Locatelli is a conversation between art and gastronomy inside a museum. A cultural gesture that unites palate, history and emotion.

A Continuous Experience in the Heart of London

Located in Trafalgar Square, the restaurant offers a sophisticated pause in the centre of the city. During the week it welcomes gallery visitors, professionals and lovers of good food who look for a calm lunch surrounded by art. At weekends the space becomes more vibrant, a meeting point where culture, leisure and cuisine come together with a privileged view. A place to return to and always discover something new on the plate, in the ambience and in the gaze.
