Florence, a Winter Season of Art, Fashion and Pure Inspiration

A time of beauty, culture and elegance in one of the world’s most captivating cities

I have just returned from Italy and, as always, I made sure to spend a few days in Florence, a city that shapes my eye, my work and the way I understand beauty. There are places we simply visit, and there are places that stay with us. Florence is one of the rare cities that give something back to those who walk its streets. Every corner holds centuries of art, culture, ideas and creativity. The city is a living museum, but also a vibrant, modern centre of elegance and expression. For anyone who works with fashion, style, design and lifestyle, it is impossible not to feel moved by the creative force that Florence has carried throughout history.

Florence is the cradle of the Renaissance and equally the birthplace of Italian fashion. It is the home of master artisans, leather ateliers, jewellery makers, couture houses and perfumeries that preserve techniques passed down through generations. The city breathes design and authenticity. Its legacy beats strongly in my heart every time I return.

December brings even more magic to Florence. Lights drape the narrow streets, the scent of roasted chestnuts and spices fills the air, festive markets take over the piazzas and the shop windows seem carefully curated to resemble works of art. It is a month of discovery, renewed energy and experiences that combine tradition with contemporary style.

This beauty becomes even more meaningful when you choose the right place to stay. At the heart of the historic centre stands La Gemma Hotel, one of the most refined and elegant boutique hotels in Florence. From the outside, the property honours the romantic architecture of a classical palazzo. Inside, it reveals a world inspired by Art Deco, with rich textures, warm lighting and thoughtful details that create a sense of modern, understated luxury. The Cecchi family, who envisioned and brought this project to life, succeeded in creating a hotel that respects Florence’s historic spirit while offering a contemporary interpretation of elegance.

The world has taken notice. For the second year in a row, La Gemma has been voted the second best hotel in Florence by Condé Nast Traveller, an extraordinary achievement for a relatively new property. The recognition speaks to the vision of the Cecchi family, the leadership of Hotel Director Laura Stopani and the commitment of a team who treat hospitality as a form of art.

Staying at La Gemma during this time of year means experiencing Florence in its most authentic way. The hotel is perfectly located near Via Calimala, a street known for its boutiques, ateliers, traditional shops and cafés. Within minutes, you can reach the Uffizi Gallery, the Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio and the Palazzo Pitti. If you are unsure where to begin, the Les Clefs d Or concierge is always ready to create bespoke itineraries with access to unique experiences, including private visits to artisan studios, perfume creation sessions with master perfumers, gourmet tours of traditional markets and truffle hunting in the Tuscan hills.

December also brings flavours and traditions that define the winter season in Florence. At the Mercato Centrale, you will find festive treats such as brigidini, befanini and copate senesi. The famous Christmas market in Piazza di Santa Croce offers handmade crafts, Italian delicacies, mulled wine and the charm of a fair set in front of one of the most iconic churches in the city. Florence glows in a way that feels almost poetic.

After a full day exploring the city, descending to the Allure Spa at La Gemma feels like entering another world. Calm, warm and serene, the space is designed as a sanctuary of relaxation. Skilled therapists offer a collection of treatments that combine technique with sensorial beauty, allowing body and mind to pause and reset. It is a gentle and necessary moment of quiet after the intensity of the city.

When evening comes, the first floor reveals another treasure: LUCA’s, the hotel’s signature restaurant led by Paulo Airaudo. The atmosphere is intimate and refined, and the cuisine celebrates the essence of Tuscan ingredients with a contemporary interpretation. It is not simply a meal, but a dining experience that reflects the elegance of the hotel and the richness of the region.

Florence has the rare ability to reveal itself layer by layer. It inspires. It elevates. It transforms. And December, with its light, creativity, traditions, art, fashion, music and vibrant atmosphere, is when the city reaches its most enchanting form. La Gemma is the perfect setting for experiencing this moment with comfort and sophistication.

In a city that remains eternal, some places naturally become part of our own story. La Gemma is one of them. And Florence, always, is a return to the purest form of beauty.
