Rio de Janeiro: The Timeless Charm of Brazil’s Most Iconic City

Few cities represent Brazil as effortlessly as Rio de Janeiro. The country’s most recognisable postcard destination continues to captivate travellers seeking the perfect blend of breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, exceptional gastronomy and warm hospitality. It is no coincidence that, according to Embratur, Brazil welcomed more than 5.2 million international visitors during the first half of 2026, with Rio de Janeiro remaining one of the country’s most sought-after destinations.
While the city is often associated with summer, Carnival and its world-famous beaches, Rio reveals an even more enchanting side outside the peak season. With milder temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere, it invites visitors to slow down and discover experiences that go far beyond its iconic landmarks.
Among the many experiences I have enjoyed in Rio over the years, one continues to hold a very special place in my memory: Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar.
No photograph can truly prepare you for the moment the cable car begins its ascent and Rio gradually unfolds beneath you. Guanabara Bay, Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana and the surrounding mountains create one of the most spectacular urban landscapes in the world.

Today, however, Parque Bondinho is far more than a famous viewpoint. Elegant cafés, restaurants, boutiques, panoramic terraces and a year-round programme of special events have transformed it into a destination where visitors are encouraged to linger rather than simply take a photograph and leave.
Among all the experiences offered by the park, one remains unforgettable. On a previous visit to Rio de Janeiro, I had the privilege of taking part in Sunrise at Bondinho. I can honestly say it is worth every minute of lost sleep. Before the park opens to the public, guests ascend the mountain in the early hours of the morning to witness the city slowly awakening beneath the first rays of sunlight. The moment is celebrated with a glass of sparkling wine, followed by a beautifully prepared breakfast, creating an experience that is both elegant and deeply memorable. It offers an entirely different perspective of one of Brazil’s greatest landmarks and remains one of the most remarkable experiences I have enjoyed in Rio. During this latest trip, another highlight was visiting AquaRio with my family.
Far more than the largest marine aquarium in South America, AquaRio offers an experience that appeals to visitors of every generation. Our visit became even more rewarding because we were accompanied by a marine biologist, who shared fascinating insights into marine life, explained the behaviour of different species and introduced us to the institution’s outstanding work in scientific research, environmental education and ocean conservation.
Walking through the impressive underwater tunnel surrounded by sharks, rays and hundreds of marine species is, of course, unforgettable. Yet it is what happens behind the scenes that truly sets AquaRio apart. Understanding the conservation projects and scientific initiatives being carried out there transforms the visit into something far more meaningful than a traditional attraction. It was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my family’s time in Rio.

As AquaRio is located in Rio’s revitalised Port District, it is well worth combining the visit with the nearby Museum of Tomorrow. Designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the striking building invites visitors to reflect on science, innovation and sustainability while perfectly complementing a day exploring this increasingly vibrant part of the city.

Another recommendation is to keep an eye on the programmes offered by Rio’s luxury hotels. Many organise experiences that are open to non-residents, from concerts and brunches to exceptional culinary events. The famous Feijoada at Copacabana Palace remains one of the city’s most iconic experiences, bringing together Brazilian gastronomy, live samba and timeless elegance.

Writing about Rio de Janeiro feels almost like writing poetry. Every visit reveals a new landscape, a different story and another reason to fall in love with the city. Perhaps it is because I am Brazilian. Or perhaps it is because very few places in the world combine natural beauty, culture, energy and personality quite like Rio does.
