The Grill at The Dorchester: A Celebration of Modern British Elegance and a New Chapter for a London Legend

Some dining experiences linger in memory long after the final glass is poured. And others become part of a city’s cultural memory, shaping the way generations eat, celebrate and connect. For nearly a century, a grill room has stood at the heart of The Dorchester. Its rich history is undeniable, but the experience today feels fresh, modern and full of theatre.

The glamorous Murano glass chandelier and gilded ceiling remain, yet the room has been transformed with contemporary energy. Bentley leather banquettes line the walls, trolleys glide elegantly through the space, chefs finish dishes at the counter, and the open kitchen brings an irresistible sense of movement. The space feels alive with atmosphere, a quality The Dorchester has perfected since it opened in 1931.

A Culinary Rebirth Led by Masters of Craft

With Martyn Nail at the helm, one of London’s most respected chefs, and Jacob Keen-Downs bringing a dynamic contemporary edge, the menu reflects how people dine today. Small plates to share, classic dishes reinterpreted, refined comfort and uncompromising craftsmanship all define the experience.

Signature dishes include tuna tartare prepared tableside, The Grill seafood platter, and a beautifully executed beef Wellington. At breakfast, beloved classics receive the Dorchester touch: omelette Arnold Bennett and Portland crab Benedict are among the highlights. Sundays bring a grand roast alongside a dessert trolley that celebrates British nostalgia with banana split, baked Alaska, Sherry trifle and a silky chocolate mousse.

There is also a gentle nod to The Grill’s historic Sherry Room through a curated sherry list and a daily Sherry Moment from 6 to 7pm. Guests can enjoy a ceremonious long pour served straight from the barrel, paired simply with plump olives. Signature cocktails include the Grill Adonis, London Calling with gin and fino sherry, and an elegant frozen Martini. As Martyn Nail explains, the vision is clear: to celebrate the very best of the grill tradition while creating a room that feels vibrant, relaxed and warm for every occasion.

A Memorable Evening by Avesso

Our Avesso team enjoyed a dinner that beautifully showcased the new direction of The Grill. We were welcomed with a glass of Ruinart Champagne before starting with Carlingford oysters and shallot vinegar. We followed with sirloin on the bone, grilled wild tiger prawns with nori and finger lime butter, and roasted Cornish potatoes. Dessert came in the form of a delicate vanilla soft serve with cherry coulis, followed by a glass of Norton Altamura Malbec 2023 and finally a perfectly chosen port wine.

The service, as expected of The Dorchester, was impeccable. A handwritten card waited at our table, the team was exceptionally attentive, and every dish arrived with the confidence and finesse that mark a world-class hotel restaurant. For those fortunate enough, the experience may even end with a visit behind the scenes, exploring the kitchen and the wine vault.

The line-up includes Natalie Duncan, Natalie Williams, Jo Harrop and Georgia Cecile, each delivering soulful performances that elevate the dining experience. Priced at £145 per person, these events embody London at its most stylish, musical and alive.

As Ronnie Scott’s shared, it is a pleasure to bring their unmistakable sound into the historic surroundings of The Dorchester.

A Dining Room With a Future as Bright as Its Past

Whether for a midweek lunch, a pre-theatre supper or a long Sunday roast, The Grill remains one of London’s most enduring dining rooms. Today, however, it feels revitalised. Tradition coexists with modernity. Elegance is infused with energy. And a new culinary chapter, led by Nail and Keen-Downs, pays homage to the past while confidently defining the future.

The Dorchester has long been synonymous with refinement, culture and connection. The Grill continues that legacy with style, flavour and impeccable service, proving once again why it remains a cornerstone of London’s culinary landscape.
