The Nut Tree Inn: a Michelin Starred Gem in Murcott, Oxfordshire

In the heart of the village of Murcott, between the River Ray and Otmoor in Oxfordshire, stands the Nut Tree Inn, a 15th century thatched pub which has held a Michelin star since 2008. It is a place where history and excellence meet, creating one of the most remarkable dining experiences in England.

I visited the restaurant at the end of August, during a weekend in the region, and it was truly unforgettable. More than a meal, it was an immersion in flavour, heritage and emotion. The setting, preserved in its authenticity, carries the strength of centuries, yet today opens itself as a sanctuary of contemporary British gastronomy.

The Nut Tree’s cuisine is a celebration of seasonality and respect for ingredients. Every dish, whether from the refined Tasting Menu or from the comforting Pub Classics, conveys precision, care and a depth of flavour that is genuinely memorable.

During my visit, I had the privilege of a meaningful conversation with the owner, who shared his vision of hospitality and the value of human relationships. Among his words, one phrase resonated deeply with me:

“We can teach someone how to cook, but we cannot teach character. Cooking is about love, and you can feel that on the plate.”

He also described moments when the restaurant created entire menus tailored for guests with severe dietary restrictions, illustrating the Nut Tree’s philosophy of care and its commitment to making each experience both personal and memorable.

The following day, I returned to the restaurant to personally present a gift to the owner: a bottle of genuine Brazilian cachaça Weber Haus, introduced in the UK by Spirits of Brasil. I chose this as a symbolic gesture, bringing with me an authentic taste of Brazil, a spirit that embodies heritage, craftsmanship and tradition, much like what I had experienced at the Nut Tree.

Murcott, with its peaceful atmosphere and historic roots, is the perfect backdrop for this gastronomic treasure. Dining at the Nut Tree is more than a culinary experience, it is about being part of a story woven with tradition, humanity and excellence.

Without doubt, it was one of the richest gastronomic experiences of my life.
