One of London’s most famous streets is entering a new chapter. Since Monday 26 October, the stretch of Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street has been closed to traffic and opened to pedestrians.
For me, this is wonderful news. Being able to walk more comfortably, browse the shop windows and enjoy the area without the constant flow of vehicles makes the experience much more pleasant. Oxford Street has always had a special energy, and I believe this transformation will bring even more life to it.

I also see the change as an opportunity for local businesses. With more room to walk, sit and enjoy the surroundings, visitors may be encouraged to stay longer, explore the shops and return more often. Restaurants, cafés and other businesses in the area could benefit too.
This is just the first stage. During the transition, new seating, planting and signage will be introduced, along with two new public squares. The plans also include trees, helping to create a greener and more welcoming Oxford Street.

The next phases will take into account the experiences of residents, businesses, visitors and accessibility groups. Construction of the permanent transformation of this section is expected to begin later in 2027, with completion anticipated in 2028.
I look forward to following the transformation and seeing an even more inviting Oxford Street for everyone who lives in or visits London.
