Royal Blue Dubrovnik: A Summer on the Adriatic

I chose Royal Blue Hotel for a few summer days at the end of July and the beginning of August, when Dubrovnik seems to glow under a light of its own. The skies were clear, the sun was high and the Adriatic had that extraordinary depth of blue that defines the Croatian coast in summer. It took very little time to understand why Dubrovnik continues to hold such a special place among Europe’s most coveted destinations.
My arrival at Royal Blue set the mood beautifully. Wine and fresh fruit were waiting for me, followed by the warmth of Croatian hospitality that remained a constant throughout my stay. Part of Royal Hotels & Resort, a collection of five waterfront properties, the hotel enjoys a privileged setting overlooking the Adriatic and the Elaphiti Islands.

My room was spacious, elegant and wonderfully comfortable, with a private balcony facing directly towards the Adriatic. Waking up and opening the doors to that uninterrupted expanse of blue became one of the simplest pleasures of the trip. The generous proportions, natural light and exceptionally comfortable bed made returning to the room at the end of a long summer day feel every bit as pleasurable as stepping out in the morning.

As the day unfolds, Royal Blue takes on an easy, seductive rhythm. Music flows through the pool areas, bars, restaurants and rooftop, creating an atmosphere perfectly attuned to summer by the sea.
The rooftop quickly became my favourite place. Its infinity pool, featuring a striking transparent glass section, appears almost suspended above the coastline, with the water seemingly extending towards the Adriatic beyond. The effect is spectacular, particularly beneath Dubrovnik’s brilliant summer sky, and it is one of those rare places that feels even better than it photographs.

Gastronomy is another pleasure of the stay, with Mediterranean influences and local ingredients woven throughout the resort’s dining experiences. I particularly enjoyed the wine list, an excellent selection of Croatian labels alongside international bottles. Discovering local wines while looking across the Adriatic somehow makes them taste even more connected to the destination. The cocktails are equally enticing, especially during those long afternoons that gradually turn into evening.

The people complete the experience. Everyone I encountered shared the same warm, engaging energy, with attentive service and a genuine sense of hospitality that made the hotel immediately easy to enjoy.
With several pools, restaurants and spaces to discover, days have a way of passing effortlessly. Those looking for a little more action can head towards the sea for water sports, including jet skiing, while the clear Adriatic below is an invitation in itself.

And then there is sunset.
Sitting with a glass of wine as the sun slowly disappeared over the Adriatic remains one of my most vivid memories of Dubrovnik. The light softened, the water changed colour and, for a few minutes, everything seemed to move at a different pace.
That is ultimately what stayed with me about Royal Blue: the feeling of a Croatian summer lived beautifully. The sea, the music, the food, the wines, the rooftop, the warmth of the people and that extraordinary evening light came together in a few days I will remember for a very long time.
